A Student Exhibition

In Belarus, where higher education still has many holdovers from the Soviet system, most students seem to study only during exam sessions. The rest of the time, they are busy with more creative and interesting things than academics. In February 2008, several activists decided to channel this distracted energy into something more constructive, so they put together an exhibition showing the unreal reality of student life in our country. Anyone could submit “fragments” of his or her student life. As a result, the exhibition was about everything, but it was only for whose brains have not been completely destroyed by the Ministry of Education.

It’s hard to figure out exactly who was able to convince the “Cinema Museum” to host the “UnRealStudentLife” exhibition for twelve days, or how it actually happened. The rather formal term “exhibition” bears no resemblance to the unusual event itself. Visitors were encouraged not only to look at the art, but also to touch and even taste it. To preserve these unique artifacts and share the unreal student atmosphere with future generations, 34 magazine created a digital catalogue of the exhibition. Enjoy a few pixels from it here!
