Studying Abroad for Dummies

For young people around the world, education is a key issue. Lately, some strange things have going on in Belarusian classrooms… Old Soviet textbooks have reappeared, students must take “state ideology” courses, there is pressure to join the state-run Belarusian National Youth Union, young people are expelled for political activities and graduates are forced to take state jobs. All of this crap encourages lots of Belarusian students to look abroad for an education that is free of ideology and state control.

The first CD of this issue is practically a textbook on higher education in 14 countries… none of them Belarus. Like a cheat sheet, it is designed to help our kids learn all there is to know about stipends, tuition, room and board, and admission requirements for foreign students, so they can escape Belarus’ “blackboard jungle.” This primer offers advice from learned Belarusian upperclassmen who are wise to the ways of studying abroad, as well as electronic catalogues of hundreds of universities in the Old and New World. Study it well, even if there won’t be any exam tomorrow!

This issue answers important essay questions (none of that easy multiple-choice!) such as why are there 13 Sorbonnes in Paris? Who do Belarusian students in Stockholm call the “Swedish Komsomol”? Why does the United Kingdom educate 21,000 foreign students for free? And most importantly, how can you pass out in Minsk and wake up at Harvard?
